Since the PPC30 Commissioners’ Report, this information has come to light which we think you should consider. It has been widely reported in the media as well as on social media channels.
Since the PPC30 Hearings in May 2024, both Queenstown and Wellington have chosen EMAS (Engineered Materials Arrestor System) for their airports, making it a viable option for New Zealand aviation, and citing that an EMAS system improves the safety of the airport.
Queenstown Airport has broken ground on their installation, and it should be noted that this has been without any interruption to their daily airport activity. Wellington is scheduled to begin installation in June 2025.
Cap-Ex costs for the airport development in Nelson are significant – so this is a crucial moment to decide how to proceed and get the most effective and safety-conscious option – as we underwrite the debt of the airport as ratepayers. It’s fiscally more prudent to choose EMAS over the existing RESA.
EMAS = cost effective + only using the existing airport landmass + safer communities.
